What is CTV advertising?

Connected TV, or CTV, means a television connected to the internet, either directly or through a streaming device. CTV advertising puts your video into ad-supported programming watched on those screens. Streaming and over-the-top, or OTT, advertising are related terms, but a streaming buy may include phones and computers as well as TVs. Ask which devices and placements your campaign actually includes.

For a practice, the first decision is what someone should understand after seeing the ad. That might be the service you offer, the area you serve or how to explore an evaluation. A completed video view tells you the ad played through. It does not tell you that someone needs your service or booked an appointment.

Can a clinic advertise on Hulu, Disney+ or Roku directly?

Self-service platforms let advertisers set up campaigns and submit video without hiring an agency. You still need an eligible service, suitable creative, a budget and a way to evaluate the result. Uploading the file is one step in that process.

Platform information below was checked on October 28, 2026 for planning purposes. Verify the current buying route, availability and requirements before committing a 2027 budget.

How much should you budget for a CTV advertising test?

Build the budget around what you need to learn. Buying access to a platform and funding a useful test are different decisions. Allow for media, video preparation, the destination page, campaign management and measurement. Clarify which costs are included in a proposal.

  • Choose one service and market. A broad campaign can spend money explaining too many things to too many people.
  • Agree on a spending limit and review point. Decide what would justify continuing, revising or stopping before the campaign starts.
  • Ask about reach and repetition. How many relevant households could the budget reach, and how often might the same household see the ad?
  • Compare the opportunity cost. If your search campaigns, website or inquiry follow-up have obvious gaps, fixing those may deserve the next dollar.

There is no verified universal cost per patient for your practice. Service economics, geography, creative, competition and follow-up all affect what a reasonable test looks like. Our healthcare marketing research can help define the question before choosing a channel.

How to advertise on CTV: prepare the campaign before uploading

  1. Define the intended result. Choose a service your team wants to grow and can support. Decide whether the immediate goal is awareness, visits to a service page or suitable inquiries.
  2. Choose the buying route. Confirm the platforms, devices, locations and inventory included. Ask what you can control and what the platform decides.
  3. Prepare a clear video. Explain one useful point about the practice or service. Use readable text, clear sound and an invitation someone can remember.
  4. Check the destination. The service page should work on a phone, answer the next questions and make contacting the practice straightforward. Medical website design matters after the ad earns attention.
  5. Plan review time. Submit the ad early enough to address requested changes. Disney currently asks advertisers to allow at least three business days for review; revisions can add time.
  6. Agree on reporting and follow-up. Make sure the practice can recognize and respond to inquiries before buying more attention.

Disney’s ad approval guidance and video specifications are useful checks. Existing social video may need a different crop, length, audio treatment or call to action. Confirm the selected placement’s current requirements before paying to re-edit it.

How local can CTV targeting be for a medical practice?

Start with where people can realistically use your services. A local clinic, a destination practice and a telehealth provider may need different geography. For telehealth, the clinician’s service and licensing boundaries still matter.

Disney currently offers state, designated marketing area, city and ZIP-code targeting. Its audience guidance also distinguishes choosing genres from choosing individual shows. Check what your chosen platform actually supports rather than assuming every service offers the same controls.

Medical advertising also needs a targeting and claims review. Disney’s campaign terms prohibit targeting based on sensitive health data or attributes. Do not build a plan around identifying people by a diagnosis or uploading patient information. Review the actual service, ad, landing page and proposed audience against the platform’s current rules.

How do you measure whether CTV brings useful inquiries?

Agree on the reporting before launch. Reach, impressions, frequency and completed views describe delivery. Website visits, calls and forms describe later actions. Scheduled and completed appointments require information from the practice. Keep those stages visible in the report.

A platform may attribute a later action to an earlier ad exposure using its own matching method and time window. Ask how that works, what is missing and whether another channel could also receive credit. A reported view-through conversion is not automatically proof that the ad caused an appointment.

Where the practice’s systems and permissions support it, use a relevant destination page, appropriate call or form measurement and a consistent inquiry source question. For a larger test, discuss whether a comparison market or holdout is practical. If appointment data cannot be connected, report that limit rather than presenting video completion as patient acquisition.

Our healthcare marketing analytics work addresses the connection between campaign reports and the outcomes the practice can verify.

Should CTV come before search or YouTube advertising?

CTV can help introduce a practice or explain a service before someone searches for it. Search advertising reaches people expressing a question or need at that moment. YouTube offers another video environment with its own buying and viewing behavior. The right order depends on your market and what the practice needs next.

If people already search for the service but cannot find a convincing page or get a timely response, address that first. Consider a streaming TV test when the practice can explain its offer, serve the intended market, follow up and afford to learn from uncertain early results.

Compare the role of paid search, YouTube marketing and healthcare SEO before assigning the budget. You do not need every channel running at once.

Questions about planning a CTV campaign

Do I need an agency to advertise on CTV?

No. Self-service platforms allow eligible advertisers to set up campaigns and submit creative directly. An agency can help with research, channel choice, creative preparation, campaign management and measurement when that work is useful to your practice.

What is the minimum budget for CTV advertising?

The minimum depends on the platform and buying route. Disney currently lists a $500 campaign minimum, and Roku’s getting-started guide describes starting with $500. A useful test also needs to account for creative, the destination page and measurement.

Can we use a video our practice already has?

Possibly. Check that it explains the intended service clearly and meets the chosen placement’s current format, length, sound and approval requirements. A vertical social clip may need a new edit for a television screen.

Can CTV advertising reach people near our clinic?

Some platforms provide local geography controls. Disney currently lists state, designated marketing area, city and ZIP-code targeting. Available reach and delivery depend on the campaign settings, inventory and platform; geography does not establish that someone needs your service.

How do we know whether CTV advertising generated patients?

Connect delivery reports to visits, suitable inquiries and appointments where the practice’s systems allow it. Review the platform’s attribution method and time window. If appointment data is unavailable, say so rather than treating a completed view as a patient.

Is this guide reporting 2027 platform rules?

No. It is a planning guide for 2027 based on platform information checked on October 28, 2026. Confirm current terms, inventory, creative requirements and advertising policies before your campaign starts.
